The iFace signature peanut-shaped design was pioneered by designer J.
Part 01
The Past
When we first released our peanut-shaped design, people thought it would never take off.
They were worried it was too thick or clunky. We knew it had potential though!

Nice to meet you! I'd love to learn more about iFace.
Designer J
My pleasure. My name is J, and I was the product designer for iFace. It has been more than 10 years since its launch.

How was the peanut-shaped phone case born?
Designer J
If you can believe it, our peanut-shaped design was first born in 2011. Back then, the iPhone 4 had just come out and Apple was really focused on making a name for themselves in mobile gaming. We saw what they were doing and wanted to build a design that would compliment the shape of an iPhone to give gamers the control they were used to with console gaming devices.
Our design gave phones grip and stability that worked perfectly with mobile games. However, it also helped as phones became more a part of our lives. The shape meant it was easier to hold your phone for selfies or watch videos on the go.
The peanut shape has been refined over the years, but still offers the same feel users love. Whether you're a mobile gamer or just a little clumsy, you'll find that the peanut-shaped phone case makes life a little easier and a whole lot more fun.

How did consumers react to iFace?
Designer J
When our case was first released for the iPhone 4, Apple was in the middle of two major problems: Glassgate & Antennagate. The first was an issue with the tempered glass on the back of the iPhone breaking. The latter was a problem with the antennas losing signal when covered by hand.
Our case, inadvertently, solved both problems and started to get more and more attention.

So why is iFace still flaunting the peanut shape?
Designer J
While Apple eventually fixed Glassgate & Attennagate, we held on to our peanut-shaped cases. While the design has adjusted slightly over the years, we still find that the shape provides the level of protection, grip, and stability, that you just don't get from other smartphone cases.
We also love the look of the unique shape and our customers love having a case that's instantly recognizable.

How has the design evolved over the years?
Designer J
We're always listening to our customers and we have made some adjustments as phone trends and usage change. Our First Class Floaty case has a lighter feel to it to accommodate as smartphones got bigger and heavier over the years.
Our First Class bumper got a see-through backing as phone colors became more appealing and people started to add stickers, photos, or more to really customize their cases.

What is the future of iFace?
Designer J
It's hard to say what the future holds. At iFace, we listen to what our customers need and watch how smartphone companies adjust their designs. We want to stay true to our roots, but make sure we're still providing the level of protection and fun that customers have come to know us for.
We can't give too much away, but we've even working on our own iFace app and looking to expand our global audience. Stay tuned as the future of iFace is made right before your face!
